Prevent Duty Statement
2024-2025
At Northview Primary School, we recognise the important role education plays in preventing the radicalisation of our pupils. It is essential to promote fundamental British values, which help build resilience among our students. We are dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment where children can discuss various issues and feel empowered to challenge extremist beliefs and ideologies.
Under the Prevent Duty, as outlined in the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, we are required to take steps to ensure that our pupils are safeguarded against the risks of being drawn into terrorism. We treat this responsibility very seriously and carry out our duties through four main actions: risk assessment, working in partnership, staff training, and maintaining strong IT policies. These actions are crucial to our efforts and are regularly evaluated to ensure they remain effective.
If we identify a child at risk of radicalisation, we will refer them to the Channel Programme, which aims to provide support early on for those who are vulnerable to extremist ideologies. We understand that our school plays a critical role in keeping children safe from harm, including the risks associated with extremism and radicalisation. We are committed to promoting the wellbeing of every child in our care.
If we have concerns about a particular pupil, we will follow our safeguarding procedures closely. This includes discussing the situation with the school's designated safeguarding lead and, if necessary, contacting children's social care for further support. We may also reach out to local police or call the non-emergency number 101 for confidential advice and assistance regarding any concerns.
The Department for Education has set up a dedicated helpline (020 7340 7264) for staff and governors to report concerns related to extremism. It is important to note that this helpline is not intended for use in emergencies, such as when a child is at immediate risk of harm or in a security incident. In such situations, we will follow the recommended emergency procedures.
At Northview Primary School, we believe that keeping our children safe is a shared responsibility. We work closely with parents, educators, and the community. By encouraging open conversation and understanding, we aim to equip our students with the skills they need to engage critically with the world around them and build resilience against extremist influences. Through our comprehensive approach to the Prevent Duty, we are committed to protecting our young people and supporting their growth into informed and responsible citizens.
